A Designer Show House Look-for-Less: Retro Nursery Theme
I recently went to one of those decorator show houses that charities organize as a fundraiser. The retro-themed nursery was my favorite, but, of course, the price tags were absurd! The bedding alone cost over $700, and I'm not one to spend thousands on designer furniture either. $3000 on a crib? My first car cost less than that!
Although I'm not a high-priced professional decorator, I believe it would be possible to recreate the retro nursery look for less by purchasing some vintage-looking curtains and crib bedding. And you don't have to pay ridiculous prices to find either.
I love the selection of vintage-look fabrics at WarmBiscuit (most are $15 a yard), but I'm not that handy with a sewing machine. If you are gifted in the sewing department, you can make your own custom bedding and curtains at a low cost. But if you're more like me, you'll have to pay someone talented to do the sewing for you.
WarmBiscuit has a custom sewing service with reasonable prices. Getting custom Roman Shades or Panel Curtains made will cost between $80-$115, and you can pick up a matching pre-made crib quilt for $95. I love the 50s-inspired Boy & Girl and the vintage Baseball fabrics.

I love retro fabric as well. I find some of the best designs are done by Michael Miller. You can see his patterns @

Once you’ve found a pattern you like, google it or check out ebay. I have often found it at $8.00 a yard.
