Get Stylish with Nina Garcia from Project Runway and Elle

Posted by Mamanista on Oct 29, 2007 | 98 Comments

I’ve been reading this fun copy of The Little Black Book of Style, by Nina Garcia, and I have an extra one to give away to you!

This book has fashion tips from the Fashion Director of Elle and the insightful and incisive Project Runway judge, Nina Garcia.

Equally at home in couture and thrift shop finds, Ms. Garcia points out that style is mostly attitude: “Fashion can be bought, Style one must possess.” –Edna Woolman Chase

Whether you need to edit, embellish, or mix it up, Ms. Garcia has some great suggestions to help you find your own sense of style.

When you feel stylish, you also feel more confident–ready to take on the next challenge whether it is a meeting with a client, a night out, or just a new playgroup.

Ms. Garcia covers special situations that many fashion advice books ignore. One of my favorite sections is her advice for pregnant women: “Wear jewelry. Lots of jewelry. Make the guy buy it for you–he got you into this. He can help you style your way through it.

With advice, inspiring quotes, cute illustrations, trends by decades, and designers to know, this book is a perfect gift for your favorite fashionista.

We’re excited to join in the fun of the Rocks in My Dryer Fall, Y’all Bloggy Giveaway.

All you have to do is leave a comment by November 2 and include your favorite style tip in the comments field. Make sure to put your website or e-mail address in the “your website” field so we can reach you if you win. We hate spam and will only e-mail you if you win!

I will say though (since I just had to talk to my 8 year old about this) and I told her “Don’t buy something simply because you think it’s ‘cool.’ Buy something that you like and will actually wear more than one time!”

My style tip. Hmmm. I think you really need to dress for your body type and age (which is younger than it used to be). Classic is always a smart, smart fashion move. And do not be afraid to ask others what they think and more importantly, be willing to take whatever they tell you to heart. Sometimes those hip huggers really do make your otherwise shapely bottom look flat LOL

A style tip???? Hmmm… making sure you’re shoes “match”, ie no sneakers with a dressy blouse or sweater. It’s good to be comfy, so investing in some comfy slighly dressier shoes is wise. That being said I’m sure their are some faux pas that I’m guilty of myself so I’m sure that I could get some great use out of this book.

Don’t follow trends. When those leopard cowboy hats were popular in 2002, everyone wanted one.
Now when you see someone wearing a furry cowboy hat on a reality show you just feel sorry for them.
A classic might mean a great blazer, if you’re conservative or a perfect black leather jacket, if you’re punk.
Just buy pieces that you feel good in and that will last a long time.
