Carry Baby in Comfort and Style: Win a Scootababy!

Posted by Mamanista on May 8, 2008 | 306 Comments

scootababy.jpgI recently had the chance to try the Scootababy, a new mom-invented babywearing carrier. The Scootababy is a hip carrier that holds baby snugly against your body in a face-to-face position. Baby can see everything going on around him as well as mommy.

The Scootababy is intended for babies five months and older (up to 40 pounds), and there are lots of pictures on www.scootababy.com of babies and toddlers using the carrier.

Since Baby Mwah is a newborn and still too small to try the Scootababy, I tested it on a friend’s 10 month old daughter. She fit easily in the lightly padded seat, and I was even able to feed her a bottle while holding her in the Scootababy. (Breastfeeding mommies can nurse while baby is in the Scootababy, and there are pictures on www.scootababy.com showing how to do this.)

The Scootababy was so easy to put on and adjust. All I had to do is secure the wide, padded waist belt and pull on the fleece shoulder strap. I could even adjust the shoulder fleece with one hand! It was easy to get baby in and out of the carrier– a handy feature since older babies often fuss to get down only to change their minds a moment later when they insist on being carried.

The Scootababy was comfortable to use. The fleece strap cups the shoulder, staying in place and spreading the weight across your entire shoulder rather than tugging at your neck.

The Scootababy is made in the USA with top quality materials (Polartec fleece, 100% cotton ring-spun denim, and performance EVA foam) from US suppliers. It comes in two styles: Classic Black and Jellybeans. Jellybeans (which is the pattern I own) is black denim with a cute jellybean fabric lining. Both patterns are practical enough to match most outfits, and my husband even remarked that he wouldn’t object to carrying baby in the black denim Scootababy.

I was a Mom who thought that snuglis were the only type of carriers and both my children hated it. When my daughter was around 6 months old and attached to me I found a sling online and FELL IN LOVE with it and so did she. It made us all so much more comfortable.

  • Jon said:

the Scootababy looks fantastically comfortable, and I’m going to need one of those in a month.

  • EG said:

I love this because it’s good for older kids. I know slings can theoretically used for bigger ones, too, but mine wants to be up high and sitting straight and he trys to climb up me in a sling.

  • Army Blogger Wife said:

I like that you can still tend to the child. When I wear my son on my back, I have a hard time handing him a binky or crackers. When he is directly on the front, I have a harder time doing things. I don’t mind carrying him, but this would make it more natural and I could wear him on my hip, where he seems to spend most of his time anyway!

  • Katie said:

I really like the waist strap. It looks more secure then the sling I have and looks comfortable.

  • Louise Brouillette said:

I love that you and your child are face to face…that’s so neat!

Love this! I like that the scootababy is sturdy and has a comfortable design. But also, it’s black. So in truth, my favorite feature of this particular scootababy carrier, is that my husband will wear it!

I loved my front carrier when my daughter was small, but it started hurting my back, not to mention that her grabby little hands quickly got in the way. I think the side carrying would be great. And the cupping shoulder strap looks really comfortable. My daughter is about 18 pounds now, and I think this carrier would work great for us!

Babywearing is an amazing thing that is done is many, many other countries – it fosters togetherness, attached parenting, and soothes the baby.

When my baby arrives in October, I’ll wear my baby, of course!

  • Linda Grieser said:

I like the idea that you can use it for an older baby, the ones that I have seen are all for smaller babies.

  • Aimee said:

With my older girls, I didn’t do much baby wearing besudes from the occasional day out using the baby bjorn. With my brand new baby, I have come to love baby wearing for many reasons. I love the closeness, the way it calms and soothes my daughter, and yes — the help in being able to have free hands at times to help attend to my bigger girls!

I haven’t tried the scootababy but would love to. The two best things about babywearing are having your baby look up at you when you are wearing her and having them fall asleep while babywearing because they are so content. Thanks for the contest!

  • Tara Hill said:

I like that he would be able to see everything around him! Thanks!

  • Regina said:

I love babywearing my 14 mos. old, and I have since she was a newborn. I really like that scootababy is a hip carry, so she and I can see the same things at the same time!

  • Lauren said:

I like that it’s made in the USA. So many baby carriers are made overseas. I am in the market for a baby carrier and have even seen manufacturers trying to decieve the customer by trying to make us believe their carriers are made in the USA.

  • Joella said:

I recently tried the scootababy in a babywearing meeting in my town and was very impressed with it. I would love to get my hands on one to use with both my 3 yr old and my soon to be 5 mth old.

What a great way to keep your baby close

  • Teri said:

Wow! What’s not to like about this carrier! When I adopted my first daughter from China I used a hip carrier. My daughter constantly wanted and needed to be held close to me. I “wore” my daughter for her first 2 years home with us. My daughter is now 3 years old and we are heading back to China to bring home our newest daughter that is 2 years old. I am looking into purchasing the Scootababy as it looks to be the best/most comfortable hip carrier that I have researched. My husband and I will both be wearing a hip carrier for our daughters. It is difficult to maneuver strollers on the streets of China. It is hard to find a comfortable hip carrier for older children. Being an older mom (49) I need all the help and comfort I can get, especially when it comes to having 2 toddlers!

  • Elizabeth said:

What I like best about Scootababy is that it will save my back. I am a petite lady and my husband is large and so far we make LARGE BABIES. My first son is 16 months and 32 lbs.!!! I have seen a chiropractor and that has helped a little. This product looks AWESOME and I know it would help my back!!!

Thank you for the chance to win!!! :)

  • Karen Bonner said:

I need this! My girl doesnt like her Bjorn and wants to sit on my hip everywhere we go, we are going on vacation and a Scootababy would be perfect!

  • Rhonda said:

I currently use Hotslings babysling. It has been fabulous for us. I am afraid my son is going to out grow this carrier, or it is just going to be more challenging for me to get him in it. The Scootababy carrier looks like a great next step for us.

  • Shannon said:

I love the ease of shopping while babywearing. Hands-free, and no worries about fitting a stroller through the aisles or finding a cart.

  • Whitney A said:

I’m all about the ease of use of the Scootababy. I’ve tried a few other slings/baby carriers and they quickly irritated me because they required more time than I had to give to make sure my little guy was safely stowed against me.

  • Danielle S said:

I love that it has a high weight limit because I have BIG babies!!!

  • Monica said:

I love that it goes upto 40 pounds! My youngest has outgrown our current sling and I find myself wishing I had it everytime we go to the park and I end up carrying her half the time.

  • R Hicks said:

It looks very comfortable, and baby is too.

I really like the scootababy because it can handle bigger kids comfortably – and since my babies are all big from the get go this would be fantastic. I love to “wear” my babies/carry my toddlers!

I like that it is less bulky than a front or back pack carrier. Not only are you holding the baby/child as you would normally on your hip so they can see you and look around, but now your hands are free too!

This looks great, easy to use, comfortable for both mom and baby. My 4th baby is 7 mo and just the right age to start with this carrier. I’ve used all the the other kinds: slings, front carriers, mei tai, pouch type, they were either uncomfortable for me or my babies didn’t like them, or didn’t feel secure. This carrier looks like it would meet both my and my babies wishes.

Please enter my name to win this wonderful
product. I am pregnant at this time.
I was Christmas shopping today and a baby fell
out of a store shopping cart on it’s head.
The baby was life flighted to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA.

My baby is due in June 2009. I definitely want
to purchase the similar product for newborns

    Thank You.

  • tanja said:

    Hi,
I love babywearing and my husband calls me the Emelda Markos of slings, as I’ve got quite a lot of different baby carriers :-).
I do need them all though, as they all have their place, one is great for cleaning, one for the front (breastfeeding, going for a walk…), one for the back, one for the hip, one great in winter, one too hot in summer etc. So, you definitely need a variety of choice.
I went to a babywearing meeting yesterday and got introduced to the Scootababy. I had just gone to meet some other likeminded people and not to buy yet another sling. Well, I tried it on and I was hooked. Haven’t been able to take my mind off it and have been researching it on the net all day.
I’d love to win one, my second baby is only 7 months old and I have a lot of babywearing years ahead of me.
I sell educational books and toys through party plans and it would be especially ideal for that, as the ergo in the front is not good for it and the back neither, as she would like to see….
Ok, enough reasons. To sum it up, I loooove wearing my babies and have caried my first one up to almost 4 and I looove the scootababy.
    Thanks.
    Cheers
    Tanja
