The Five Best Maternity Jeans (for the rest of us)

Posted by Mamanista on Jul 31, 2008 | 456 Comments

Oh how I enjoy window shopping–whether it be on Spring Street or on Internet Explorer, on Robertson Boulevard or on Firefox. And if you’ve got it, well girlfriend, go ahead and flaunt it. But like most of the mamas I know, I need to be practical when actually pulling out the plastic. So, here are five fun denim picks for the mama to be–all under $100 (and all but one under $50)!

Liz Lange Maternity Jeans Liz Lange for Target Fashion Denim Pants ($29.99 at Target): That’s right, honey, I said Tar-jay.I love these real waist, hidden elastic jeans because you don’t have to worry about bands showing or slipping. These jeans are super comfy and even work during that awkward postpartum period when nothing seems to fit right.

Another great real-waist option is these drawstring Maternity Real Waist Chambray Pants ($25 at Old Navy)…why can’t all my pants have drawstrings?

Secret Fit from Motherhood Maternity Secret Fit Belly styles from Motherhood Maternity ($19.98-$44.98 at Motherhood Maternity): Secret Fit Jeans put full panel maternity jeans to shame. If you are tired of mid-belly panels that cut into your stomach, fall down, and create awkward “panel lines,” you’ll love the new secret fit panel that comes all the way up above your belly to just below your chest.
Maternity: Maternity Roll-Panel Pinstripe Trouser Jeans - Stripes (Blue)

Maternity Roll-Panel Pinstripe Trouser Jeans
($36.50 at Old Navy): Dress up your denim with these pinstripes. For a fancier sort of jean, these jeans will take you from a stroll in the park to shaking your baby mama booty–just don’t shake too hard and fall over.
Signature by Levi Strauss & Co ($25 at Walmart Women’s Apparel): I am generally not a fan of the demi panel jean, but the Signature collection actually manages to stay put and offer a lot of support, even after several washings. And the denim itself looks great–like you paid much more for your jeans.
GapMaternity: Full panel fabulous jeans - denim

GapMaternity: Full panel fabulous jeans
($68 at The Gap): The priciest pick on our list but one of our editor’s favorite maternity denim choices. After trying dozens of maternity jeans, these are the only ones that went the full term for her, providing plenty of support without falling down. Because when you are 38 weeks pregnant, you shouldn’t have to worry about losing your pants.

Maternity Wear Tip: Look for long, babydoll style shirts at cheap “teeny bopper” stores and buy in L or XL. Most of my shirts that fit me best at 9 months pregnant were those treasures that I found and not real maternity shirts (they were too short to cover the belly well).

I like the way the Low Slim Flare fit me the best! I have a problem finding jeans that are long enough, but I can always find Levi’s that work! And my best maternity clothes tip is just to keep it simple…Don’t run out and buy everything you see! Maternity clothes are temporary, so just buy the basics! Save your money and buy some nice clothes as a reward for losing your baby-weight later!

Turn dresses into shirts. Wear leggings, under the belly. Sometimes that’s more comfortable than a panel when you aren’t going anywhere to special. But, invest in a least on pair of maternity jeans you fee great in.

When I was pregnant, I saved a lot of money by shopping in the men’s department instead of in the maternity department. Okay, Maybe I wasn’t a fashion plate, but men’s t-shirts are well made and an XL was plenty roomy — same with a men’s button front shirt. Just call it “boyfriend maternity chic” and save lots of money! :)

For me the maternity tip that I have is to find a pair of jeans that have stretch in them and you feel great in. There isn’t anything worse than being pregnant and not liking the way you look in your clothes. Silver Jeans makes some stretch jeans that have taken me into my 8th month of pregnancy! I would love to try the Levi jeans as well.

Since I’ve been through maternity, now I need a mid to high rise, can’t stand seeing low rise everywhere, it does not work with my post-childbirth stomach. A maternity clothing tip: buy adjustable waistbands, they will come in handy as you grow, and then shrink back down.

I just like the classic 5 pocket trouser jean for women.

As for the tip: focus on your face. Keep making up, wear your lipstick, smile, do your eyes, don’t forget your earrings. Your body is not going to do you any favors right now, but hey, you are growing a person, after all, not entering a skinny model contest. When I look back at my pregnant pictures, it really is true, I am glowing! Even the day before I pushed out my ten pounder. I was so huge I could not see my feet, but my face was beautiful! (Now the pictures in the hospital right after that are a different story - ha. I LOOK like I was up all night and then pushed a ten pound bowling ball out of my . . .)

    Thanks for having the giveaway!

Oooh, I like the 5 pocket trouser look the best. My maternity tip: Once the belly begins to grow but your still too small for maternity pants, use a “button extender”. You can find them at sewing supply stores for a couple of bucks. It also gives you room when your regular pants still don’t fit after the baby!

I think the trouser jean is a very figure flattering cut.

Since I am pregnant and 9 days past my due date, I thought I’d share a maternity clothing tip with you. Get a belly band! I have used mine for almost my entire pregnancy. It helped me to wear my non-pregnant pants longer (unbuttoned and unzipped)…and then kept us those maternity pants later that just don’t stay up very well on their own. I have a Bella Band brand one, but I know there are quite a few other brands, too. It’s a must have pregnant item for your wardrobe!

I like the Bootcut jeans for boys. My tip is to *not* buy any Secret Fit Belly styles from Motherhood Maternity, at least not unless you try them on and wear them around the store while walking and stopping and sitting and bending over for at least 10 minutes. Maybe they will work for you, but they don’t work for me. I recently bought $200 worth of Secret Fit Belly styles from Motherhood Maternity. I was amazed at how well they all fit me and how comfortable they were. The petites were the right length for me, etc. They didn’t dig into my belly. I was so happy…until I took them home and wore them. Within a couple of minutes they start creeping down and I’m constantly pulling up my pants, which can be really hard to do since I’m also often carrying my toddler in a hip carrier. I think it will actually only get worse as my belly gets bigger.

I think one of the simplest and most practical tips I would give a new mother-to-be is to go large on your clothing. Give yourself enough room to really be comfortable. I’ve seen too many women who try to squeeze themselves into the smallest size they can get in to and it only makes them like a pregnant guppy.
