A Fan of Fans: Save Energy and Money

Posted by Candace on Nov 6, 2008 | 683 Comments

Ceiling FanWe installed ceiling fans to save fuel–did you know that ceiling fans can reduce your energy bill by as much as 15% both in the winter as well as in the summer?

Just hit the reverse switch and the current will push down the hot air that has risen to the ceiling, heating the room more efficiently.  And more efficient heating equals big savings as energy costs rise.

On most summer days, we just used our ceiling fans and then turned on our whole house fan in the evening on the hottest days.

Ceiling Fan InstallationHome Depot has great guides to selecting a ceiling fan and installing a ceiling fan and even has a section of video instructions so you can do this project yourself and save even more money. If you need a little more guidance, you can check out the home improvement clinics at your local Home Depot.

With these guides, we were enjoying our new fan in just a couple of hours.  The ease of the project will depend on your attic access and whether or not you have an existing electrical box.

And good air circulation does more than just save you money and protect the environment, it may also reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) for babies. A recent study suggests that using a fan may cut the rate of SIDS by as much as 72% (Find out more ways to reduce the risk of SIDS).

Now that I know about the heating and health benefits of using ceiling fans, I’ll keep using mine through the winter.

Money and fuel are both finite resources, so I am always looking for energy-saving solutions that are better for the environment and for my budget.

We do several things. We use energy efficient light bulbs; we turn off lights when we leave a room; we save using large appliances (dishwasher, washer/dryer) for early morning or late night. During the day, all the blinds are open so we don’t need to use lights, and the heat from the sun lets us run the heat less (it’s normally set to 65 degrees).

We do more stuff, but I don’t want to write a novel. :)

We’ve replaced our light bulbs with evergy efficient ones.

We have also put power strips in each of our room so can turn them off except when charging our phone, ipod etc. So as to not drain power just by have the cords plugged in.

One day we turned everything off we oculd in the house and then took the kids al outside to watch the power meter run, then we went back in the house turned on all of the lights, the tv’s the stero, etc. Then went back outside and you could see the power meter running faster. It was a good object lesson on how much power gets used when things get left on. The kids (we have 6) have been much better about turning things off now.

We’ve been doing some major energy savings. Our roof has been leaking for about 2 years. We couldn’t afford to fix it. We borrowed some money , built a new bath over the kitchen. Put a new roof over the laundry and bath down stairs. It now rains only on the outside. We tore down an old trailer with double pane windows, which we saved. We put the windows in the new room. We have replaced the kitchen and frontroom with them. Insulated walls and ceilings. We live in an old house which needs alot of work. So far I’ve used a case of caulking through out our projects. My kitchen had plaster walls and ceiling about 3 months ago, removed them to built the new room. Ran out of money so the $50 gift card would come in handy. Please enter me, thank you

Rooms in home not being used are closed off with vents covered. I made sure all drafts are sealed off and then went a step further. I used clear shower caps on the overhead vents in the bathroom when I noticed a draft there. And I keep the stoppers in the bath tub and shower over the drains to keep drafts from those areas.

We are also trying to do laundry all at one time rather than several separate loads throughout the week because this saves on energy for the dryer. It you dry several loads in a row the dryer does not need to use as much energy heating up because it is already heated up from the previous load that was dried. We are truly making an effort as a family and it is a learning process that has been ongoing. We will keep trying to find new ways to conserve. Thank you so much for the opportunity to enter.

I don’t use a clothes dryer..if the weather’s too cold to hang laundry outdoors, I hang on shower rods in bathrooms and use antique wood dryer racks. Also, whenever we aren’t in a room we turn the lights out, and I always shut my computer off every night, and when I leave the house.

-Changed all our light bulbs to the little squirly ones (lol)
    -Energy Star appliances
    -Lower heat, more blankets
    -Cover windows
    -Lights off when not needed
-My husband CANNOT but seriously I can pee in the dark, I don’t have to turn on the light in the middle of the night!
-If it is yellow let it mellow, if it is brown flush it down (OMG I cannot believe I just typed that out, eww)
-Girls in our house, do not shave while showering
-Turn off water while brushing teeth
-Candles are not only romantic, they cut down on the power bill!

A lot of these things are more of a HAVE TO because of the economy, we have cut back on everything and anything in order to be more self reliant and to have a few dollars left at the end of the month. Scary times! We will make it through.

    Happy Holidays
