sprig-toys-garden-keeperWe love our Sprig Toys! We reviewed a selection of the new Sprig Hollow Eco-Friendly Nature Toys for toddlers and preschoolers and they were a big hit at our house. (full review)

These adorably cartoonish toys are made from recycled wood and reclaimed plastic. “Sprig Wood” is easy on the earth, durable, and child-safe, too. Kids can play with Sprig Toys in the dirt and the water.  Sprig Wood even smells fresh and woodsy.  And each toy comes with a seed paper flower, which you can plant and watch grow–a perfect way to explore nature.

Want It: Sprig Hollow Toys will be available soon at Amazon (other Sprig Toys are currently available).

Win It: In honor of Earth Day, we have 10 sets of the Garden Keeper ($10) and one winner will also receive the Sprig Hollow Farm set ($25).

You can enter every day until the end of Earth Day (April 22, 11:59 EST). Just leave a different comment each time with any of the following:

Choose one entry method per comment and please enter just once a day.  You may use the same entry method multiple times.  Contest open to all. Winner chosen by Random.org. We never share your e-mail address.

This is our first 2009 Earth Day giveaway and we’ll have more coming soon!

We take the kids to the recycling center to empty all of our bins (they love to crash the glass into the bins!). We cloth diaper, so they see us washing and hanging them to dry. We always use thermal mugs, everyone in the family has a Sigg Bottle, and try to educate them that EVERYDAY should be Earth Day, not a certain date on the calendar! our kids are the next ‘green’ generation, and we must lead by example!

Our plans may not sound like a whole lot of fun, but some of my gfriends are getting together and taking the kids to the dump. It is vast with mountains and mountains of ugly. Just pure ugly. I think it will be eye-opening to the children. Afterwards, we will picnic on the beach, with reusable or recycleable utencils, then walk the beach with our litter bags. There, we will enjoy Gods world of vast beauty, and discuss what the feelings are.

Before having my son, I was an art teacher (not a great eco-friendly job) and I used to emphasize frugality in supplies (like not dumping gallons of glue on a project) and reusing and recycling items. We had a scrap paper box that kids liked to throw their scraps into, and we’d reuse them for collage.

We do a lot to teach our children about ecology. We take nature hikes as often as we can. My son keeps a nature journal and documents things we find along the way, like habitats, animal tracks and food sources. We raise tadpoles, and butterflies every spring to teach about the life cycles and show how everything is connected and important for the ecosystem. We also have lots of books about the environment and endangered species etc. Teaching a love of nature is very, very important to use. :)

Nina and I are going to re-do all of the planter boxes on our deck. Strawberries are her favorite, so we’ll add them to our city-deck garden. Living in the city makes it more challenging to plant the traditional Earth Day tree, but we do our best to be creative and contribute (and it’s fun to get our hands dirty in the process).

  • tree said:

We do quite a bit to be ‘Green’. i have been a vegetarian for over 20 years, and raised my family vegetarian. We have several organic gardens, fruit trees and berry patches and grow/preserve much of our own food. We have egg laying hens, that provide us with fresh eggs. We use rain barrels to gather water for irrigating the vegetable gardens. We recycle greywater in the flowerbeds. We are in the process of getting a few dairy goats. We compost, recycle, rarely buy new and use reusable tote bags for all of our shopping.

  • Darlene Alexander said:

We practice Recycle, Reduce and Reuse everyday in our home. We carry our purchases in reusable bags, we recycle our trash and we reuse bags & plastic deli containers. This year, we made “green houses” out of the plastic containers that you buy fruit in (like strawberries). The work great for starting seed that will go into our garden. We will be planting our garden and a tree on Earth Day. Happy Earth Day.

  • Jenny S said:

For Earth Day my 6 month old munchkin and I will be helping a local community garden with their weeding and expansion. Hopefully I’ll be able to pass the kid around for friends and family to play with enough that I’ll get to play in the dirt too!

  • Jenny S said:

I love to point out little animals and interesting local plants to little ones on walks, whether hikes in the hills or around the neighborhood. We talk about fun things about those species, like what they eat or what animals might eat them, if plants serve as homes for animals, and what would happen if that critter weren’t around anymore. It’s an easy way to pass the time outside and learn about the web of life as well.
