A Baby Doll for the Big Sister

Posted by Candace on May 12, 2009 | 159 Comments

Corolle Bebe Do New Sibling DollAs a mom, I’ve played with more dolls in the last year than I’ve played with in all the previous years of my life.

When I was expecting my infant son, we introduced a baby doll to prepare my older child for her new sibling. Since then, she’s been inseparable from her baby dolls.  And, like many of her celebrity counterparts, including Suri Cruise and Violet Affleck, her favorite baby dolls are made by Corolle.

She may not have famous parents, but my daughter does have an adorable Bebe Do Doll.  This charming baby doll is the perfect little bundle for a preschooler, especially one who has a new baby brother or sister.

Bebe Do’s sweet face is sculpted in the sweet expression of a new baby, ready to explore what the world has to offer.  With her dewy newborn skin and expressive eyes, you might just want to cradle her in your own arms.

My preschool daughter cares for her dolls as if they were real babies, dressing and undressing, washing, and feeding them each morning and evening. She loves that Bebe Do not only comes with her own bottle but also a little plush bunny and a book. My daughter very carefully teaches Bebe Do to walk and tucks her in every evening with bunny.  She even asked Papa to babysit Bebe Do one day while my daughter played at the park.

Corolle crafts heirloom quality baby dolls that are still designed for play. Bebe Do is soft and cuddly and weighted to feel like a real infant. And my daughter loves the subtle vanilla scent when she snuggles in with Bebe Do at night.

WANT IT: Bebe Do is on sale at Amazon for $40. Corolle Dolls are available at fine boutiques everywhere.

WIN IT: Corolle is offering one lucky reader a Bebe Do Doll with an accessory (subject to availability). Explore the Corolle Les Classiques Nursery Accessories and tell us which accessory a special child in your life would most enjoy and why. For a second entry, leave a separate comment with a tip to help a child welcome a new sibling.

Sweepstakes ends May 27, 11:59 PM EST. Winner chosen at random. Shipping to US + Canada Only. Average retail value of prize $100.

Visit our Tips for Preparing for a New Sibling for more ideas about getting your older child ready for a new baby brother or sister.

I prepared my older kids for new babies each time by trying my best to continue to give them all my love and attention, and by showing enthusiasm for the new baby by including them in some doctor visits where they could see the baby by ultrasound. They also helped decorate the nursery.

tip for adding a sibling. we had six, so there was always adjusting going on. we always had a birthday party they helped to plan for the new baby. I also let them do fun things when i was feeding the baby, paint my nails, etc. whatever we did it must have worked, because they all grew up and still like each other and get together as friends all the time

I have been looking for the perfect baby doll for my granddaughter, Lily. She started Day Care today, and I have just been so upset. Trying to be strong for my daughter and son-n-law, because it is hard enough, but, sob..sob…it’s hard. They are in the Coast Guard, and this is what they had to do. I am out of state. Anyway…Lily needs a baby. I fell in love with Calin Charming Pastel. The Doll Bed would be perfect, however, my daughter runs a clinic, so the Doctor Set would be cool. Thanks!

I would give this to my daughter, who would love it, and I would choose the baby carrier for her, so she could bring her baby with us when we went out in the car. I think she’d get a real kick out of that.

  • Rosey said:

I think an item like this is great to help an older sibling adjust to a new baby because they can participate in the same manner mom is, only by attending to their own baby. If the older sibling is a boy, items that say things like, “I’m the big brother,” and “I’m the little brother (or sister)” for the baby help, and so does reading about a new sibling in a book.

  • Delilah said:

These dolls are so cute!! My daughter would LOVE a baby doll with a stroller. She loves to wheel all of her dollies and bears around in her little grocery cart. I bet she would love the stroller even more.

  • Delilah said:

When we were expecting my son (is now 5 months old) we spent months reading my daughter (2 yrs old) books about bringing home a new baby and about being a big sister.
When the baby finally came and she was brought to my hospital room to meet him, we made sure that there was a toy in the baby’s bassinet just for her. We had the baby tucked in his bassinet with a little Eeyore doll (her favorite!) tucked right with him. We had her get the doll and told her it was a gift from the baby.

My three year old granddaughter would love this doll! And my favorite accessory would be the Baby Meal Set :) These dolls are just precious!

  • Maggie M said:

My tip for helping a child welcome a new sibling is to get the child involved from the very beginning. Have the older sibling help you set up the new baby’s nursery, place stuffed animals somewhere, pick out a book or two to read to her new sister or brother. And, after the baby arrives, the older sibling can become your helper by getting a diaper or wipe out when needed. And I would explain to the older child what an honor it is for him/her to be the older child and buy him/her a special gift, too.

  • Heather H said:

My daughter would love the twin stroller… the more babies she can carry, the happier she is! She likes to take everyone on walks!

  • Heather H said:

While pregnant with my 3rd child, I pointed out babies to my older 2, everywhere we went. We just talked about it a lot and what to expect! They were 4yrs and 6yrs old at the time. Also, having a few new toys to play with after the baby arrived helped!

  • Vicki wurgler said:

My granddaughter would love the Floral Print Stroller she would take her doll for a walk!

  • April said:

I think my daughter would love the Floral Print Carriage. Whenever we visit her friends with baby strollers/carriages, she spends the entire play time pushing dolls around the house. However, with the doll strollers, she often tries to sit in them – so a carriage style would cut down on that.

  • April said:

Before my 2nd was born, we spent a lot of time talking with the first about how fun it would be when she had a sister. However, we also spent a lot of time talking about what little babies can and can’t do, so she wouldn’t be confused when the baby couldn’t run and play with her from the start. It has also helped to always make an effort to think of a job for her to do with respect to helping take care of the baby – she gets the wipes out when the baby needs a change, etc.

  • Heather Beckstrom said:

I love the Jeans & Trendy Blouse. I think it would be so cute to see the girls with them. I have twins so I did mean girls!

  • Becca said:

The little floral high chair is adorable. My baby is nearly old enough to start eating solids, so I’m sure my 2-year-old would have fun “feeding” her baby at the same time I’m feeding mine.

  • Becca said:

We also bought a baby doll for my daughter before we brought my son home. But I think what was most helpful for her in making that adjustment was getting her involved in taking care of him. She has been so helpful about grabbing a clean diaper or a blanket for him. And she really takes an interest in what we’re doing for him and how he’s feeling.

  • LN said:

Navy Blue & Pink Carriage is a great accessory for being just like Mommy :)

  • LN said:

For my oldest, I made sure to get him a doll so he would have his own baby to take care of.
When I had my third, I made sure both my boys had special gifts to show they were not forgotten about, and appreciated the fact that some of our “baby” gifts were really gifts for them.

  • Shawn C. said:

My daughter would love the Floral Print Canopy Bed…she’d love putting her bebe into such a sweet bed! or She’d also love the Floral Print Carriage to take her bebe on walks! What a beautiful doll, she’d just love it!

  • Shawn C. said:

Keeping a child involved helps so much in preparing for a new baby! Finding ways the older child can “help” is so helpful, too. Even helping with choosing the nursery decor is great for the older child. And always finding one on one quality time with your older child no matter how busy you are is important!

  • Aura H. said:

My daughter’s only a year but already enjoys her soft baby doll. I always wanted a nice doll carriage when I was little and I would love for my kids to have the navy blue and pink carriage. The outfits are really cute too- I would buy the denim dress for my daughter if it fit her, I guess I could always buy it for the doll if we win.

  • Aura H. said:

Before my twins were born, my 4 year old and I would look at baby pictures of him and discuss what babies need and how to take care of them. We took out tons of books from the library and even babysat my nephew for 2 days for my son to get used to the idea of having a baby in the house. Now that my twins are a year I must say that my 5 year old is the best big brother ever!

My son was 8 when his sister was born. It was quite an adjustment! I put together a basket of little gift for Johnny, there was a Boxcar Kids book (that’s his favorite series) silly putty, bouncy balls, a baseball cap, chewing gum and some other little things. It was from his new sister, and we gave it to him when he came up to the hospital to meet her. At 8, he had to know that his dad and I put it together for him, but he thanked her and told her how thoughtful she was.

It melted my heart…and I think made it easier for him!

My idea of a nice doll for our baby is one that comes with a good variety of options so it can be played with for years, and one that can be taken out & about in the pram without being too big to stow-away. I also prefer it to be able to sustain a few blows to the head when getting thrown out the pushchair by a curious 18 month old!

  • Kristen said:

The “big sister” here would go gaga over the Pink Flounce Dress Set. She would love to stroll her baby around in that!

    As for a tip:

Carve out special one-on-one time with your older child/children and stick to it. Every Sunday, my oldest and I go to the bagel store, get a bagel and then head down to a special spot and look at the water. We talk about our week and just spend about 30-45 minutes being together with each other. She loves this special time with Mama…when she doesn’t have to compete with anyone else (no baby, no Dada, no phone calls, no work, no housework, etc) for my attention. And I love sharing these special moments with her.
