Healthier Hotdogs and Hamburgers: Organic Grass-Fed Beef

You probably already know that organic meat is free of antibiotics or synthetic growth hormones and is more nutritious for your family, especially for children and pregnant moms, but you may have had trouble locating quality organic meat at your local grocer or butcher.

While a trip to an organic farm is a great learning experience, it may not be a practical way to do your weekly or even special occasion grocery shopping. At Greensbury Market, you have quick, convenient access to premium-quality organic meats.

Sun Safety: Baby Sunglasses

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than one million skin cancers are diagnosed annually. Protect your child by practicing sun safety. Apply sunscreen regularly and teach your baby to wear sunglasses and a sunhat while outdoors.

Children’s eyes are especially vulnerable to damage from UV rays, but it’s hard to keep those little eyes protected. If you have a young baby or even a toddler who just won’t keep glasses on, try a pair with a strap.

Fab Find: Tuffo Waterproof Outdoor Blanket

Summer means days at the beach, picnics, playdates at the park and outdoor concerts and fireworks displays. Unless you enjoy sitting on the grass, it’s helpful to have a blanket handy. The folks at Vat19 sent me a Tuffo Outdoor Waterproof Blanket to review.

The top cover is soft enough for a baby, and the cushioned-blanket is big enough to accommodate a family of four. The waterproof nylon underside keeps you dry even when the ground is wet. It’s easy to wipe the bottom clean with a damp cloth after use. If you prefer, just toss the blanket into the laundry for a thorough wash.

Chugga, Chugga, SPLASH! Water & Sand Table Review and Contest

At a recent playdate for my preschooler, I had a big playset with two slides, a play cottage, a play kitchen, and tons of smaller toys out for the kids but the biggest hit of the day? The Sand & Water Transportation Table from Step 2.

This group of three and four year olds clustered around the table and contentedly filled, poured and splashed for almost two hours. Meanwhile, the moms sipped lemonade and chatted in the shade…

You Can Save a Life: Learn CPR

National CPR and AED Awareness Week (the first week in June) is a great time to learn or brush up on this vital skill.

According to the American Heart Association, “about 80 percent of all out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in private residential settings” and “effective bystander CPR, provided immediately after cardiac arrest, can double a victim’s chance of survival.” CPR is also important as the weather warms and people begin to open their pools for summer fun. In case of drowning, CPR can be the difference between life and death.

But I don’t need statistics to understand the importance of CPR…

Want to change a child’s life for the better without spending a dime?
When money gets tight, it is even more important to think of those who have even less than our own families. Even if you are trying to keep your wallet closed, you can still open your heart.
The Fresh Air Fund has provided free summer vacations to New York City children from disadvantaged communities since 1877. Without this organization, many of these kids would miss the chance to play in open spaces, take hikes, and just relax breathe in …
